Switch to Linux. Identify the version you want on http://www.distrowatch.com then buy a copy from http://www.frozentech.com. You'll be a lot happier with a little work on your part and hardly any money spent.

you can also edit the registry to not start up programs you do not use on startup by doing the following:

1.) start-run-regedit
2.) go to HKEY_LocalMachine_Software_Microsoft_windows_currentversion_Run /runonce

3.) remove programs you do not want to run on start
4.) remove programs you do not want to run on startup from start-programs-startup
5.) remove programs from Autoexec.NT file located in the system folder(or run a file search on your computer for it)
6.)you can edit autoexec.NT with notepad

Another thing you can do is this

1.) start-run-MMC
2.) file-Add/Remove Snap-in
3.) Add
4.) Select Disk Defragmenter
5.) click ok
6.) Add
7.) click ok
8.) expand disk defragmenter
9.) defragment your hard drive


Antoher thing you can do is go to internet option in internet explorer and delete your history, cookies and offline content

Another thing you can do is disable the active x controls in internet explorer by going to internet options then selecting the programs tab and clicking manage programs and disabling all active X add-ins you dont use, this frees up RAM

Another thing you can do is open task manager and sort your running processes by memory usage and end the processes you do not need

You can also increase the size of your page file

theres alot more you can do to make your system run smoother, but if i told you id have to kill you.j/k those are the basics, should help u alot.
