I have question: Say you where looking for a dog of a rare breed to show. Would it be better to join the breed club first?

Well, the breed I am looking at is Lakeland Terriers. We don't have local clubs, and the parent club is very selective of members. The all - breed clubs around here are just as selective.

With a rare breed, probably so you can learn as much as possible before investing in a show dog.

A local breed club would be a good way to meet other people in the breed, and possibly help you choose breeders you'd buy from...another bonus is that you'd be proving your interest to the other breeders in the club, which would make them much more likely to sell/co-own you a good quality show puppy down the road.

As far as the National (Parent) Breed Club goes...you generally can't join until you've been involved in the breed for awhile. Many clubs require every new applicant to have 2 current members sponsoring them, and you'll only meet current members if you're actively involved in the breed.

Offhand, I'm pretty sure you need the dog before you can join the club - I would suggest you attend local dog shows which offer a Rare Breed category, speak directly to the handlers of the breeds which interest you-
Based on what you learn from knowledgable people, interview breeders, research your breed and find a good fit -
A dog, especially a show dog - is a big commitment of time for training, grooming and traveling. Breed ring entry fees add up fast, so you have to expect the financial commitment too - including travel and hotels. With a rare breed, that means more travel because they are not represented at every show.
Try to find breed specific yahoo groups to learn more about your desired "rare breed' too -
Not just a pretty face! Your dog is your commitment - choose wisely!

Some breed clubs require that you have the breed to the club you wish to join first some do not. So if your interested in a particular breed then that's a very good place to start most of the time. Breed clubs can be very clicky sometimes so hopefully you find one that will welcome you with open arms.
NOTE: Thanks Loki. I belong to 2 breed clubs 1 you have to own the breed of dog for 2 years before you can submit your application for member ship and have 1 person sponsor you. The other I joined on my own. But I still have to have the breed of dog that the club represented. In my case Golden Retrievers.

Absolutely! I speak from experience. Rare breeds are tough to evaluate, and most judges don't even know what to look for. You need to get to know the people who know the dogs, or otherwise you're never going to get a dog worth showing. Another thing, the rare breed world is very small, and everybody knows everybody, literally--someone who has been in the breed for a while can look at your dog and tell you exactly who you bought it from and half of it's Pedigree. NO joke. And people sell to their friends--their good dogs, anyway. If you want a show quality dog, you need to know somebody.

What breed are you looking at?

From other people's comments, let me say that most breed clubs will welcome anyone who's interested--you don't have to own the dog first. Local shows don't include rare breeds--you're looking at American Rare Breed Association, Rarities, or International All Breed Canine Association for shows.

Go to the dog shows. See the dogs up close. Talk with the breeders. Ask who has pups to sell. Be prepared tp pay big bucks for a show quality pup. Read everything you can about the breed before you get one. Ask a million questions of the other breeders. Good luck.

Most definetly join the club.. If you can.. If you prove yourself to be serious. seasoned show people will be much more willing to help you find what you are looking for.. call the club you are thinking of joining. tell the person your new and would like to visit one evening at a monthly meeting. They love new poeple.(serious ones) You should also go to a few local shows and watch.. and see what its all about.. ask questions to someone whome obviously is a show person. explain your new and could they explain what ever it is you would like to know.

I show chihuahuas. I joined a club .. and it was well worth it. Best thing I ever did.

GOOD LUCK!

Yes. Breed clubs have a registry of breeders that are members, and can point you in the right direction.
Good luck!

try writing the club for info about them, when they meet, dues etc ask if you would be able to attend one of their meetings as you are currently looking to own that breed and would like to meet others who do.
