he shows up early for interviews, and they really liked him, instead of starting him from the bottom they wanted to train him for a couple of months then promote him..

He needs to talk to his boss and explain what had happened. A police report or a doctor's note could be helpful.
I manage a business with 80+ employees and once in a while a new hire might come in late for his first day. I don't like it, but don't fire the person on the spot.
On the other hand, when someone shows up late for a job interview, I instantly let them know that they just failed it and can go home.

The best thing that he can do right now is to call back in, apologize and explain the situation to his new boss. Most companies realize that things happen in life, never with good timing. I do not think that in this case there will be a problem. Key word here is keeping in contact with the company. The best thing he did was to call, the next best thing would be to follow up.

Thats a good one. I would have him call back again, and like speak to a scretary or something so that he can have him paged or whatever. It may look bad that he did no show up. However, if his boss is understanding, he may ask for like an accident report or hospital record showing that there really was an accident.

If he explained the situation, then the boss will mostly let it go. I think he will be fine looking at the situation. Most bosses will not take these kinds of emergency into account and let it slide. If they don't then those are not the bosses you want to work for anyways.

he did call and leave a message. That's important.
Now, he should call and let them know he can come to work. Let them tell him whether or not he should report, or forget it.
I hope everything works out OK. If he cannot reach anyone on the phone, then go and report at whatever time he should )(6?)
