Yeah they wake up as soon as you turn the channel and yell "hey I was watching that"
Its a control thing.
no pun intended

My own trick is to lower verrrry slowly the sound level to just a background noise while the little darling sleeps and then seat closer to the TV and watch what I want. It is the change in noise level and tone that seems to wake them up - that dratted survival instinct of old - so don't raise the old caveman's instinct and you can get away with murder. Or not having to watch sport all evening long.

Oh yes, this is a genetic characteristic of the male (unless of course he has been retrained by a good woman).
I stayed with a friend for a while (female friend) and she was such a control freak, when she left the room, she muted the TV and put the remote in her robe pocket and took it with her. I know it was her house, but weird, huh?

My dad would do that, fall asleep in the chair watching football or something. A couple of times I managed to change the channel just to have him wake up 15 or 20 minutes later and go "Hey I was watching that!"
Used to drive me crazy.

YESSS! it is sooooo absolutley annoying! they fall asleep and then you go to change the channel and they flip out on you and by the time you say but your sleeping their back to sleep. the worst is when your watching something everyone will want to watch but then their snoring SOOO loud you cant focus on whats on tv.
