Best Before Date means just that. Best Before. The manager probably didn't want to deal with the hassle of sending it back or paying for it.

Best before dates on any food or beverage mean the same thing: the manufacturer has tested and tasted the product and determined that it will continue to meet their quality standards at least until approximately 7 days after the best before date. The date also allows the manufacturer to trace the product back to a specific production date/batch in case of problems. Sometimes, if the product stays good for a very long time, the company picks an arbitrary date, usually 1 or 2 years to set as the best before. The product will not become unsafe past the date, it just may not taste as good.

Actually, while they shouldn't sell anything past it's dated stamp, the boxed wine industry is silly to put dates on their packaging at all. It's probably a weird FDA rule telling them that they need to to meet a standard that has nothing to do with some non-fermented boxed juice.

The thing that makes a wine turn to vinegar is oxygen. Wine in a corked bottle has to be laid down on its side to keep the cork wet. Dry corks will turn brittle over time and allow air to seep in. And if air goes in, increased pressure behind the cork pushes the cork out ever so slightly...All that air coming in contact with the wine will oxygenate it. That process turns the wine to vinegar. However, boxed wines are in air tight bags. No air gets in. Not even after you've opened it. Franzia is at the cheap end of all the boxed wines, but there are several decent, drinkable boxed wines out there. They keep for a long, long time, and deliver perfectly normal glasses of wine, one after the next. While I wouldn't worry about the date on that box, you have every right to return it if you want to. :)

The manager shouldn't sell anything that is past its sell-by date. It's against the law.
He should reimburse you, or replace it with an 'in-date' box of wine. Out of date wine can taste like vinegar!!!!! (Mind you, a lot of boxed wine is supposed to taste like that)

It means that the manufacturer has given a date at which the wine is at its best, not all wine is good to lay down and every bottle with a use by date should be adhered to as its quality will depreciate

Does it really matter? It's boxed wine.

because boxed wine is not stored properly, it Will start to turn after awhile. unless you want to drink vinegar, watch the dates.
