Standing ramrod straight in dress blues and crisp khakis, the seven color guard members lifted their rifles for one of the most solemn moments of any Memorial Day parade, the 21-gun salute. Hundreds who had gathered to witness the tribute watched in silence.

Just then, the eggs came flying. One glanced off a tree branch, and landed far away from the marchers in yesterday's Memorial Day Parade in Rockland, said Ryan Durfee , a former Marine who was marching in the color guard. Another crashed 8 feet in front of the color guard.

"Too close for comfort," Durfee said last night.

After the throwing , Durfee said he saw two teens run from their backyard into their house, and two police officers chase after them.

Rockland police said last night that they arrested two 13-year-olds and charged them with disorderly conduct and assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony.

This behavior is par for the course in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts. Fat Teddy Kennedy will probably earmark $20 million in the next bill to study why these 2 poor youths were "disenfranchised".

While most will say that it was a horrible crime because of the Memorial Day part please remember kids are kids.
An example. It was just before a somber holiday, two eggs hit the kitchen window. I was on the other side eating breakfast. I saw the truck the eggs came from and gave chase. Caught up with them to find that it was two 13 year olds in the back of the truck who were volunteers delivering food to the poor for the holiday. They had dropped a dozen eggs and couldnot use the carton again, they, not thinking like a responsible adult but as a kid, decided to see how well they could throw. I let them go about their business with a lecture.
I can only hope that if the kids were just being kids and not really attacking that they not be charged with a felony.
I don't know Massachusetts laws but in Illinois hitting a person with an object on the public way can be a felony, the same holds true if the person is a protected individual (handicapped, some public employees, elderly, etc)

Harmless eggs? True story. Teenagers firing a pellet rifle, decided to shoot at a moving train. The glass in the condutors apartment is bullet proof, so no problem? Well, a small wing window was open, the pellet went through and shatted the poor man's elbow.

I would take them aside and give them a FIRM lecture on what Memorial day is, and the sacrifices our soldiers have made for our freedoms. Then I would lock all the doors and windows so that my kids would never open them, and keep them indoors for two whole weeks.

Even if I were protesting the Iraq War, I would never resort to these measures.

Violence begets violence. Beating people in most civil societies went out at least one hundred years ago. It is illegal in all states and in the military. Jail time and/or a fine is more appropriate.

I really hope that caning comes back into style soon. Teenagers are not impressed by merely being arrested and locked up; neither are many adults.
