I intend to visit Canada from USA via land border in my car. I am not a US citizen, am on H1. I know I need a visa to enter Canada but can I get the visa from Port of Entry? I read something regarding this in the Canadian consulate site but there are no details there. Anyone has any details???

NO! You CAN NOT obtain a visa at a Canadian port of entry. You need to apply before coming. Here is a link to the guide and forms, that says so. The same form says you should apply a minimum of a month before you want to come. That suggests it could be a bit shorter than that if there are no problems, but there are also no guarantees.

Well, you definately need a passport. If you don't have a passport you are not going to see beautiful Canada. You don't need a visa. You don't even have to pay that much, only about $20 or even less. When you get there you go through customes. You have to park your car and get out and do a bunch a security checks. that's all. By the way, what part of Canada are you visiting?
