I think it is just a myth. In thinking back over all the dogs I've had, the males were more eager to please and were sweeter with the other dogs and even the cats in the household. Maybe this is something that would depend on breed, but I don't think so.

Absolutely untrue. Wonder how this even got to be a myth.
Females make the rules and enforce them. I've seen tiny lil female doggies subdue the biggest mastiff, just by looking 'em in the eye.
If I ever get married (highly unlikely) and have a daughter, I'd wish upon her the talent to be a biatch.

Not in my house lol. My female dog, who is part of a pack of another 1 year old Papillion and a 17 year old male cat, is the dominant one. Our Papillion rolls over on his back and does whatever she says! My female is only one pound bigger than our male dog. Our cat outweighs them both lol

I don't think so. Where do you think the term "alpha *****" came from?
In my experience, the opposite is true, ESPECIALLY with neutered dogs.
