We usually can find the refills at Home Depot, but as of right now they are not available there. My husband builds model airplanes really needs these refills in order to complete his plane. He does not need the mask, just the screw on refills.

You may be in luck at somewhere like Grainger too.
What you will find is that many companies that sell respirators make them so that the cartridges are not interchangable.
In lieu of cartridges, you could build a containment shelter (like an inverted aquarium) for him to do his work in, hook up a vacuum cleaner to the aquarium to vent the fumes (and discharge them outside the work area).
