well, with the scanner powered on and connected to the computer, and with the computer recognizing the scanner, install the software that came with the scanner.
Then run that software, place a picture on the scanning plate, and hit the Scan button.

just install the software, hook up the scanner/printer, put the picture face down and hit START SCAN or SCAN TO (depending on scanner), but also if you have pictures on a memory card, some scanners (like my HP) have memory card slots on the front. You can edit your photos that you scan to make them look better using free trials like Corel Snapfire. Other programs are available with free trials check www.freedownload.com
the reason i'm telling you this is because most scanned pictures will need to be edited a little to look their best. good luck

If you are using a hybrid printer/scanner you should install a scanner utility from the printer driver CD. If you don't have the CD you can download it by visiting the manufacturer's website.
