The Bible is divided into 66 different "books", or sections. Near the start of the New Testament (second half), you'll find the book of John. Go to chapter 3, verse 4. Look for the big "3" mark, and then look for the sentence(s) within that block after the little "4".

The bible is broken into books. Each book has a name. John is one of the books. Then in the book of John, there are chapters. The first number (3) is the chapter in John. Then each chapter has verses with a number beside them. So you find the book of John, the third chapter, the fourth verse. You may also see John 3: 4-10. That means read verse 4 through verse10.

When the books of the Bible were originally written, they did not contain chapter or verse references. Why was the Bible divided into chapters and verses? The answer is to help us find Scriptures more quickly and easily. It is much easier to find "John chapter 3, verse 16" than it is to find "towards the beginning of John." In a few places, chapter breaks are poorly placed and as a result divide content that should flow together. Overall, though, the chapter and verse divisions are very helpful.

The 3 would stand of the chapter and the 4 would stand for the verse. For example Proverbs 1:1 would be chapter 1 verse 1.

The 3 is the chapter number. The 4 is the verse number.
Each book in the Bible is divided into a number of chapters. Each chapter consists of a number of verses, which are anywhere from one to several sentences.
