Rowling writes in real incantations and forms of real magic in her books; the LotR series does not.

I'm a Christian and I love Harry Potter. Not a big Lord of the Rings fan though. It is all just fantasy.
God bless,

Interesting, too, because they both contain a Christ figure as their central focus (not sure if the Christ figure is going to be Snape or Harry himself in HP).
shaolt: You don't see the parallels to Christianity in a story where a hero takes the troubles of the entire world and conquers them by his own sacrifice?

They enjoy C. S. Lewis even more, even though the Narnia books include all sorts of mythical creatures. But Lewis was an educated Christian and so he knew what fundamentalists today do not, namely that in order to really understand the Bible, you need to be able to appreciate the mythical.

Harry potter is written by someone who glorifies evil and the Lord of the Rings was written by a christian who was good friends with C.S.Lewis (Lion Witch and Wardrobe).

Read Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Get some basis for your accusations.

Well, for one thing there are underlying messages that are different. Harry Potter tells children not to trust their parents -- there is no such message in Lord of the Rings. Just to point out one item.

I read the question and was going to say "because Tolkien was a Christian".... but you beat me to it.
Voldemort seems a better "satan figure" than Sauron, anyway, but that's logic for you.
