I think it was used in earlier human life as part of the digestive system. Man ate more things that were hard to digest back during the early years of man. The appendix I think was used to help digest that food.

"The appendix is rich in infection-fighting lymphoid cells, suggesting that it might play a role in the immune system. Whether the appendix has a function, it is routinely removed without any ill effects or side effects.
Some experts believe that the appendix was for digesting leaves as primates, over time we have eaten less vegetables and over the thousands of years we have evolved for this organ to be smaller to make room for our stomach."

"Loren G. Martin argues that the appendix has a function in fetuses and adults. Endocrine cells have been found in the appendix of 11 week old fetuses that contribute to "biological control (homeostatic) mechanisms." In adults, Martin argues that the appendix acts as a lymphatic organ."

Okay, you don't like Wikipedia, I'll give you the original source, although it's a more difficult read....the original article in Scientific American Magazine...reprinted at their website. What is it with you people? I thought you were followers of the great God Science...can't stand to have some silly little statement refuted?

You need to do your homework and stop accepting everything your evolution professor has spoon fed you. The appendix contains lymphatic tissue that polices bacteria entering the intestines thus increasing resistance to infection/disease.
