Is this some sort of way to diminish the importance of athieism?

athieism isn't a word.
But "atheism" is not capitalized, either. Because it's not a proper noun. Nor is atheism a religion.

Atheism is not a religion and not an official establishment in any part of the world, therefore, it is not capitalized. It is not an attempt to belittle the belief that a God does not exist.

2) The word atheism comes from the word theism which only refers to belief in some religion, and not a specific one.

Atheism is a religion.
It is listed as such in nearly any religion text book and most philosphy books (if they touch on the subject).
Scholarly speaking, religion is just your answer to the questions of faith. Atheism answers with a no, but it still answers. Thus it is a religion.
This view is gaining support and as it does the change is being made from atheism to Atheism.

I was just wondering the same thing. lol. I think it's because Atheism isn't exactly considered a religion by most people.

Atheism is not a religion. Like a number of other philosophical stances, it's not capitalized. Nihilism isn't capitalized, either, nor is capitalism, existentialism, or rationalism.

It's from a lack of respect. I capitalize Christianity, and I expect them to capitalize Atheism.

It doesn't deserve a capital letter because nothing is a religion without God. athieism as a religion is one of the biggest contradictions ever. God is the only one who deserves a captial letter!
