Cat might be jealous. Or just wants to play. If you can catch the cat doing this, just take a squirt bottle with water and squirt the cat when he does this and say "no" in a low tone. One or two squirts should do it, no need to go overboard. If the cat looks like he's going to attack, squirt him and say "no". That's how I train my cats not to do a certain unwanted behavior. Works good. You may have to keep a squirt bottle in every room of the house, but at least he will stop.

I think maybe the question should be what to do to keep the new pup from bothering the older cat? LOL
The cat is just doing what is natural for it. It is showing the pup who rules the house (try telling the cat it does NOT rule...ha ha) and other than having a wet cat from spritzing it every time it gets near the puppy, the only thing that is going to cure your problem is time.
Sooner or later they will learn to get along or learn to avoid each other. The cat would probably be doing that even if it was a kitten instead of a puppy. Good luck and have patience. the pup will learn.

Your kitty might indeed be jealous: That happens a lot, when a cat sees a newcomer that they perceive to be an intruder.

What's worse is that that puppy is probably little enough for your cat to think he's prey.

Oh, I just had another thought: Has your cat been neutered? If not, take care of it. That should calm the aggression some at least.

What you're probably going to have to do is spray the cat when he attacks the puppy, but praise him as long as he's nice. And meanwhile, don't let them in the same room without supervision.

Good luck!

For the health of the puppy, you need to keep them separated. Maybe when the puppy is older he can take the cat's dominant behavior better. Clip your cat's claws so he won't be so dangerous. You're right when you think it might be jealousy. Be sure to give kitty lots of attention.

We supply a command "bypass away IT" on each and every occasion my German Shepherd domestic dog won't bypass away the cat on my own. The cat can fend for himself, yet each and every from time to time i'm getting aggravated!! Lol. he's discovered to bypass away him on my own as quickly as we are saying "bypass away it" with the aid of fact we experienced him to comprehend that on each and every occasion we are saying that we propose he needs to bypass faraway from the cat. We did this by potential of repeating the word whilst grabbing his collar and pulling him away. Now he does it on his own. yet with a small dogs like that i does not be stunned if the element bit ya while you have been attempting to tug it away. i could use my foot and push the dogs away whilst saying bypass away it, and as quickly as they end attacking, compliment the dogs.
