I jsut got a set of acrylics as a gift, my mom got them for me becasue she knows I love painting with them. However, i dont' know what brand I used at school, and I don't knwo what the best brand is. These are Liquitex Basics, and I am sure, by their name, that there is better out there, those these are not bad at all. I am jsut wondering who has found a really excellent brand.

as a professional artist that has been using acrylic paints since they invented them in the 60s, I have tried all the brands. I like liquitex, heavy body tubes. I am not a big fan of the basics because they don't cover the canvas very well. I like the tubes better than jars as they last longer and dry out less. Golden is considered the premium brand, but I don't see enough difference to pay the extra money for them. Check out www.misterart.com as they offer Liquitex at 50% off retail. The colors I use are raw umber, yellow oxide, ultramarine blue, thalo blue, Napthol red, burnt umber, raw sienna, burnt sienna, (2 tubes of white) cadium yellow medium. These simple colors will make most any other. Keep away from black except for signatures. It will muddy your paints. go to www.newcenturytv.com and click on artist and see some very good intructional DVDS on acrylic painting. I think it will help you allot.
Ps. spend your money on really good brushes: Ruby satin silver brights.

LIQUITEX BASICS IS A STUDENT GRADE ACRYLIC. THERE IS A PROFESSIONAL GRADE THAT THEY MAKE IN A SOFT BODY OR A HEAVY BODY. THERE IS ALSO A BRAND CALLED GOLDEN. THEY ARE PROFFESSIONAL QUALITY AND THEY MAKE SOME REALLY STRONGE PIGMENTED PAINTS. THERE IS ONE THAT IS MADE BY DALER-ROWNEY AND THAT IS THE "SYSTEM 3" OR THE "SYSTEM 3-D". ONE IS SOFT BODY THE OTHER IS HEAVY BODY.

I use System 3.

It is the best of all worlds. Big bottles. Not too expensive. Good to work with and mixes very well with cheaper and more expensive stuff.
