How can I train my cat (she's 2 years old) to stay off of the table and my dresser when i am not home? The spray bottle with water doesn't seem to work for any amount of time. I am going to have to get rid of her if i can't train her to stay off things she is not suposed to be on

options:
* put foil paper or double-sided tape on the furniture the cat jumps on.
* try a "Scat Mat" or automated spray repellents (http://www.petsmart.com/global/search/search_results.jsp?In=Cat&N=2025622&Ne=2)
* while you're away restrict the cat to room(s) which don't contain furniture the cat should not jump on.

I placed double sided sticky tape on the areas I didn't want my cat on. This worked really well and, after a while, I removed the tape and the cats stayed off the tables and counters.

I also got my cats a cat pole with a platform for them to climb. Cats absolutely love to be high up and the cat pole satisfied this urge to be higher up.

Good luck!

was she allowed to do these things before you got her? if so, it may be a mute point. if it was ok for her to due before, you may be stuck with what you've got. training takes time. it's not like you can just sit her down and say, "i would really like you to stop walking on the table and dresser, ok." and have her understand immediately. give her some time to understand what you want. negative and positive reinforcement will help. remember when she's good, give her a reason to want to be good again. i hope the two of you can come to some form of agreement. good luck.

Cats like high places where they can sit and look around. This is an instinct retained from when they were wild and needed to see danger coming in time to be able to get away. You're not going to be able to change this behavior, and it will just irritate you and the cat if you keep trying. We allow our cats to walk and jump wherever they want to, and it makes for calmer cats and calmer people.
