I recently moved out of my apartment. Now I am getting notices in the mail that I have ordered lots of products-cosmetic products, etc.-and the address the companies are given is my previous one. I changed my address with the post office but the person who moved into that address obviously received one or two pieces of mail that contained my name. Now they seem to be ordering stuff in my name and giving my old address expecting the things to arrive. They don't of course because I don't pay for them and because my mail is forwarded I am getting the bills! A reverse address doesn't find me this person's name and the person gives the companies false phone numbers. What do I do?????

You can make this as complicated as you want to make it, by trying to track them down, and calling all these companies, and suing them, but the simple answer is just call the police.

This is identity theft, and it's a felony, and taken very seriously.

Indeed call the companies that are billing you.
The problem is...mail order companies send out most advertisements as Joe Smith or current resident at 10 Main St. The USPS is obligated to deliver these advertisements. Most people will tell the company when they order that they are opening a new account, and the company deletes your info.
However, if the new person does NOT advise the company of the change the change is not made. The company may use United Parcel Service as it's shipper. United Parcel has no idea that you moved, because people do not generally inform UPS about address changes. So they deliver the parcel to your old address and the new person gets the 'gift'.
That is why it is always advisable to buy from companies that use the Post Office to ship their goods. USPS WILL know of your change of address, the packages will be shipped to you at your new address. Then you can notify the company that you did not order the goods, and YOU can return them free of charge.

Best thing to do is contact your local FBI/Secret Service/ Law Enforcement Office. That is considered identity theft/fraud which is a felony possibly 2nd degree, but try contacting your bank and having your credit cards suspended, contact the cosmetic company, and have them ignore orders with your name, contact local law enforcement and see what they can do. If all else fails contact your local FBI Office and they will carry on the investigation. The reason I gave secret service as a reference, is they usually investigate counterfeit money. But go through those steps and you'll probably go to court and get it squared away, and the perp may get a prison snetence.
Hope This Helps!

Explain your story to the companies who are billing you then go to the police department and file a police report.

Contact the cosmedic comapnies that are sending you the bills and tell them first to stop accepting orders in your name.

Next tell them that you have not placed any orders and that probably soemone else is doing it and using your name. They would probably be interested to hear it and would help you out.
