I'm not sure what type of dog you have. But some times a big dog when they have to bend down to drink it will make them spit up food and water. And even choke on it. If he is a bigger dog you may want to put his bowls higher up. They sell stands for them or you could build some thing. If this doesn't help you may try to give him a little less water. Wait till he drinks it all "slower" then give him a little more. Maybe he is just trying to drink it to fast. Hope I helped.

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Technician and hope to help! Your question is such a common one!! Your dog is simply drinking too much water too fast. No worries!!! My Saint Bernard does this, as well. If you want to prevent the coughing/spitting up you could limit the amount of water he drinks at any given time. Only fill his bowl 1/3 of the way instead of a full bowl. Obviously, be sure he always has water available.

Hope this soothes your worries!!

If he's fine with eating solid food, then it could be he is drinking too fast. After playing, our Rottweiler would drink like there was a water shortage. Then she'd stop. A few seconds later, she'd spit up a puddle of what she had drank. The coughing too can be from the tongue trying to drink faster than the throat can swallow. If your dog drinks slowly and/or has any similar problems with eating, this problem could be indicative of a serious throat problem developing. Call your vet.

My dog does that too. When he eats or drinks he sometimes chokes and sounds like he's going to barf, but then he's OK again. My vet says that bulldogs just tend to do that because they have a hard time swallowing water while drinking because of how their face is shaped. Does your dog have a little pushed-in face too? One thing I've done to control that is give my dog a really shallow pan of water, rather than a full water bowl. That way he can sort of pace himself rather than get a face full of water.

dogs do this for a number of reasons the most common one is when they drink to fast and it goes down the wrong hole (just like we can do sometimes) which is ok.
more serious reasons is when the windpipe isnt closing properly but you would notice he does that when eating also.
If he is doing it all the time i would get the vet to check his throat but i imagine he is just gulping the water.

HMM I am a firm believer people are overreactive to dogs symptoms but its only after he drinks not while he drinks?? I would have it checked. It doesn't sound like it is an emergency but I would certainly have it checked with his yearly exam.

My dog does that all the time, it's normal. I've asked the vet and he says my dog is just gulping too quickly.

Check his throat for an obstruction. Are you using tap water? I would only use tap water if you would drink it yourself. If you don't like to drink tap water, buy it in gallon jugs.
