I have a 2yr old and 4yr old....Ive seen those bathingsuits that have floats all around them - What if the floats makes the child get stuck with his/her face in the water, Do they have weights or anything to make the child float back up? Im so nervous about water...Whats the best way to make sure the kids are safe when we go to the lake?

I tried those bathing suits and frankly I found them more dangerous, my kids kept flipping over in them so their faces were in the water and it was hard for them to get back up.

Life jackets are the safest things to wear in the water, but most kids hate wearing them, they're really restrictive.

What worked best for me is those simple water wings - the inflatable arm bands that go on the upper arms. My 2 year old daughter and my 4 year old son wore them very comfortably and never went underwater and had a ball. Just make sure you get the right sizes for them so they support their weight.

Good luck!

Time for swim lessons, check with your local swimming pool or your local YMCA or local Red Cross chapter. I taught swim lessons for Red Cross for 7 years. They have the best swim programs but city or YMCA are also good. Swim lessons start for children as young as 6 months. Always make sure they have an approved life jacket on a boat or lake swim site. Arm floaties are good for the pool or shallow lake but don't use them for life presevers. They will hold a child up keeping their face out of water but will deflate if bitten or plug is pulled. The only life jacket that will not keep your child's face in the water are either the infant/toddler jackets with head support or the faithful old orange jackets yu can buy just about anywhere. They are inexpensive and are just as good at keeping a child's head above water. The oly drawback is they will keep a child on their back and most children do not like to float on their back in the pool while everyone else is swimming. Again it's time for swim lessons. Maybe some for you too and a water safety course. Lots of summer fun. Remember never leave a child unattended in the water, not even for a second. Make sure they always swim with a buddy. Buddies always know where each other is.

Stay with them at all times and allow your child to wear a life preserver. I let my daughter take lessons at the age of 5 and now she can truly swim. it was a little costly, but well worth it.

Check these stores.

Target.

Walmart

Kmart

No, the swim suits are terrible!!! My daughter went bobbing head first and couldn't pull herself back up. I bought a life vest from a boating shop to ensure her safety. You cant put a price on life you know! :)

Life vest is the best, but don't let your kids get out of sight
