The Marines are the infantry of the Navy--the land force. The Marines are part of the Department of the Navy, and are technically not a seperate branch of the military; there are three--Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, and Department of the Air Force. The Coast Guard is part of Homeland Security, although originally they were part of the Department of Transportation.

The truth is in SOME of the previous answers... but like an old squid I have some gripes for:

C. Hall "Except for the medics, Navy pilots and SEALs (special forces) in the Navy, most of the sailors never enter a war zone" Gee I was enlisted aircrew and have over 1000 hours of combat-flight time... also don't forget SEABEES, coxswains, storekeepers and anyone on a frigate or destroyer which gets to "play" with other ships or small patrol craft (eg Iran).

and Stanley: "Navy can't swim but the marines can." Gee, I was a Navy Rescue Swimmer and swim instructor... everyone graduates Recruit Training as a Class 3 swimmer.

The TRUE difference... Marines grunt alot

The Navy transports Marines on their ships (known as carriers). Except for the medics, Navy pilots and SEALs (special forces) in the Navy, most of the sailors never enter a war zone (ex.Iraq). The Marines on the other hand are sent off those carriers on their helicopters and then stationed in Iraq, etc to fight. So the Navy is much safer than the Marines and that's the big difference.

The Navy generally fights from ship. The Marines are more like the Army. Actually, the Marines are a department of the Navy----The Men's Department.

The Navy is responsible for maintaining the Littoral and open ocean lines of communication (sea lanes) and supporting as directed land operations.

The Marines are traditionally amphibious operations experts and provide shipboard security for the Navy.
