Loosing weight long-term involves making changes to your lifestyle that you feel you can live with long-term. A lifelong commitment to a very restrictive diet just isn't possible. A lifelong commitment to a healthy diet is. This doesn't mean nibbling on carrots for lunch, but it also doesn't mean scarfing down Fritos. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain breads and pastas, and lean sources of protein (eggs, skim milk, fish, chicken, cheese, yogurt). Sounds like a big change, and it is for most people, but it doesnt have to be all at once. Little tweaks to your diet are a great start (switch to diet soda). When those feel like a habit, make another adjustment. Etc, etc.
The source I listed has lots of great information on healthy eating and exercise. Good luck!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Eat smaller meals and make exercise a part of your daily life. It requires a lifestyle change in order to keep weight off. Avoid fast food and drink as much water as you can.
