The best thing is to spread the word about adoption.
There are pros and cons to no-kill shelters. Sometimes dogs can end up staying for years in these! At which point they get depressed, develop behavior issues, etc. from being kept in a tiny, tiny pen.
Kill shelters get so overloaded with animals, that there becomes no room for new ones, therefore they have to do something. There are a lot of high kill shelters out in the country areas, where not a lot of people visit them.
Encourage anyone you know that wants a new animal to look into these shelters!
Also, try volunteering! It is a lot of fun, and looks great on resumes!

I'm afraid things like this have been going on for years and years. You'll never stop it but look at it this way.....
If a dog is on the streets all alone no owner, it has to fend for itself, getting what meager morsels it can find. Many don't find food and starve. When they are caught and put in a shelter..Yes they are fed and watered but the sanctuary's only have limited money and cannot look after all the dogs so they have no alternative but to euthanize them. If you want to help out,go to the shelter and offer your services for free, give to the charities, adopt a couple of dogs..as long as you can look after them....GOOD LUCK The world needs more people like you!!

Sadly, this is the fate of many dogs and cat due to the vast over-population of them that we've created.
There's no quick-fix for this situation, but you can do your bit by adopting any animal you can afford to keep, and having any cat or dog you own neutered. You can also encourage other people to do the same things, and try to discourage people from breeding their animals - by finding homes for new puppies or kittens they are taking away potential homes from animals whose lives depend on them.
I suppose you could always campaign to make all shelters no-kill but unfortunately in areas where dog and cat populations are out of control this is the only option besides being put out on the streets. Join the league of responsible pet owners and encourage other people to be the same, hopefully one day every cat and dog will have a good home!

Be a strong VOCAL advocate of spaying/neutering. Tell everyone you come in contact with how important this is.
Be a strong VOCAL supporter of adopting shelter pets. Tell everyone you come in contact with how important this is.
Do not buy from backyard breeders and spread the word to everyone, why this is wrong.
Adopt a shelter animal yourself.
Volunteer at local shelters.
Educate yourself. Learn as much as you can about the statistics, procedures, and implications, so that when you get into a debate with someone about the issues you are well armed. Use knowledge as you ammunition...don't rely just on your emotions.
Report backyard breeders and puppy mills.
Be a responsible pet owner. Lead by example and be very vocal against those who are not responsible.
It all boils down to education. Educate yourself continuously and continuosly educate others.

volunteer at one. campaign for spay and neuter. adopt. just so you know the idea of a "no-kill" shelter is preposterous. they are constantly over crowed and many will not accept dogs with health behavior issues etc. So the dogs they do not have room for or will not accept are just tossed to someone else to do the dirty work. I volunteered at a kill shelter; it is very rewarding to see your hard work get adopted. And most were, my shelter had an 84 or so % adoption rate. the dogs it put to sleep included aggressive, shy, sick, or otherwise not adoptable. There were even dogs they gave extra time to like a rott/great dane mix that was very sweet but because of her size she was there for two months. do not believe everything you read.

Of course, the most obvious answer is to adopt but not everyone can make that commitment. You can volunteer to foster dogs until they get adopted, make donations to the shelter to help cover the expenses of keeping those dogs alive and in good heath, volunteer time to the shelter and make your community aware of the wonderful dogs up for adoption in the area. Also educating people about the need to get their dogs spayed and nuetered is a great place to start. Good luck!

I believe dogs are only euthanized if they are dangerous or stay in a pound for so long without being adopted. Maybe you can get people to adopt them or petition against kill shelters.

You caqn adopt them. Or rescue the dogs from the high kill shelteres, pay the fee, and then find sutible homes for them yourself. You could foster dogs, volunteer at shelters to walk dogs, help keep their kennels clean, socilaize them, and just give them the love and attention to many desperatley need, so that they are more likely to be adopted out, when they seem friendly.

Educating people you know about spaying a neutering is a good start. Encourage friends and family to adopt from shelters. Unfortunately, until people stop allowing animals to breed and aren't willing to train them properly, there is always going to be a problem. People often can't afford to take care of their animals and if they can't, they shouldn't adopt.

Volunteer at a local shelter. They always are in need of people to work when they have adoption days.
