He still has an "animals/jungle theme" that he has had since he was a baby. Its not too "babyish" but I still think its time for something else. He likes sports "ok" but not crazy about it. He likes cars/trucks/planes etc.. but I want something that will last for several years. any ideas?

At what age do you think a boy would no longer like a car bed? or Disneys cars? I dont want to do something he is going to outgrow for a while.

I would think an animal jungle theme would be great for a 4 1/2 year old. Has he really outgrown it or do you just need a change. Maybe you could just change it around some or add some new things. If he isn't very opinionated right now he probably will be once he goes to school so you might want to wait a bit before changing everything around b/c he might want it changed again before too long. Maybe you could get some plain curtains and bedding-bold colors, those will go with anything you end up changing to. put up some new posters. etc.. remember you dont really have to have a "theme" and have everything match unless you just want to.
I wouldn't invest in a car bed. they take up too much room and I dont think he would want it after age 7. You would spend way too much to have to buy another new bed in 2 1/2 years.

The projector idea is a great one! We've used it on our kids' rooms as well, and have always gotten great results. If you don't want to paint the walls, you can project the image onto a medium or large canvas (craft stores sell them fairly cheap). You might want to check out ikea for inexpensive bedding and curtains. Our eight year old has fallen in love with the curtains there that are blue and green, and have giant leaves on them... good luck!

Id just do paint some areas in bright colors, and also go to the company store - especially the outlet - for bright colored kids sheets, comforter, etc. Then do accessories only in a theme. Especially art projects he can do. Like in the foamy row at michaels, then frame these in the plexiglass frames.
ikeas great too for kids stuff.

I had a nephew who had a car-bed till he was 7yrs. old. As for the decorations . I wouldn't paint them on. Just hang some pictures and posters, so he can change it later on. You can get some nice posters of cars or animals. Also you can find curtains in just about anything you can think of.

I had a muralist paint a picture of the Zakim bridge here in Boston on my sons wall with traffic going over and then on other walls connected to the bridge different roads with trucks etc. YOu could get a projector and copy it on the wall and paint in yoruself thats what my muralist did! She mad a copy of a drawing on a clear sheet and put it on an overhead projector to trace on my wall. Pick a picture of something meaningful in your town and try it yourself!

maybe you could mix and match like a some cars driving through branches or animals on the left side of the room and cars on the right. he is a little kid so if you want to wow his room you better have an imagination like a 4 year old
happy painting

he is 4 1/2? ask him what he wants, he is old enough to let you know what he would like. also get him involved in teh process of picking out all the bedding and decorations and things and he will enjoy his room all the more.
my dauther will be 4 next month and she picked out all her own princess stuff for her room. i switched her from her toddler bed to a twin bed a few weeks ago and she loves it, more comfortable she says

I would decorate in cars...not the movie "Cars" though. Get him a twin size race car bed with the matching toy box and dresser. Then just go from there. It'll be very handsome and he'll love it!

Why don't you go for some bold colours like red ,blue and orange and have sporty curtains and bedding ...as he gets older you simply update the curtains etc to plain. You can get some great accessories like clocks and notice boards and change them around ...it is easier than re painting!
