Let's look at it another way - the Navy is the Marine Corps own personal taxi service. Get real the Navy and the Corps operate hand-in-hand for amphibious operations. Once the Marines are ashore and are off the beach (Navy Beach Masters own the beach) they are on their own for the most part. The Navy gets them where they are going, offloads the Marines and their equipment as needed, provides hot meals to the field if the Marines have not established a field kitchen ashore, provides medical and hospital services including medical evacuations, and provide intelligence, etc. Then after the operation is completed the Marines and the equipment are backload aboard the ships. Then the amphibious group sails away to a nice (usually nice) liberty port and fun is had by all. Plus, we have Marine air squadrons serving on carriers with Navy air squadrons. They are a equal part of the embarked air wing. That includes the helo's and ground support personnel. The Navy and the Marine Corps do a pretty good job working together and neither is the others own personal little anything.

I wouldn't agree with that, stated in that way. However the marines were created as apart of the Navy. Like there use to be the Army Air Corps, but now it's the Air Force and it's own branch. I don't know if the Marines ever completely parted from the Navy though.

I don't agree... in actual USE, the US Marine Corps are the President's quick reaction force. Nothing "personal" about it.

The Marines served shipboard during the days of boarding other ships in warfare and security for shore-parties when they were originally organized as the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775 as naval infantry. In preparation for the Naval War with France, Congress created the United States Navy and Marine Corps in 1798.

Since that date they have been a PART of the Department of the Navy. Oh sure we always have debates on the "squid" vs "jarhead"... but we work together.

Every branch has it's own purpose. No branch is better than another and none is subservient to another, no matter what some of you yahoos think. Those of you that TRY to poke twisted fun at the United States Marine Corps wouldn't be able to hack ONE hour with those men and women. I know I wouldn't have been able to on my BEST day. The Corps does not need to be defended by inbred, half wits who TRY to put the Corps down, so I won't even try.
I honor and salute all my brothers and sisters in ALL the branches of this great country's Armed Forces.

Holy **** I can't believe I'm saying this. No, the Marines are there own bracn hof service. Aside from the legal statues that state as much they steeped in their own tradition, strategies and tactics and operational conditions. Also, the Navy has no direction over the operational control of the Marines. The Marines also have their own regulations.
