Everywhere you turn someone has an add kid, or they can't go near food, or grass, or dogs, or fresh air. It's pathetic, what's going on?

I see what your saying...most doctors say there kids have ADD or depression. My doctor today said I need to be put on depression meds because when I wake up in the morning I don't feel good. I think it's lack of sugar and I'm getting tested for that in a week. Anyways, I didn't understand why she said wanted to put me on meds b.c. I didn't feel good...and she said if there is nothing wrong with the blood tests next week she will put me on the meds. I stated I wouldn't take them because I had already taken Zoloft for 3 years (15-18 years old) and it didn't help me then, why would it help now? Then she asked my fiance if I was depressed and he said "not anymore than everybody else in the world..everybody is sad or stressed about something..money..homes..bills..kids. If thats a fact, everybody needs to be on pills.." and she didn't say anything else after that.

most doctors now a days I truely believe are pill pushers for depression or ADD. Sure, some kids do have it...I'm not going to say they dont. But when a kid is active and they're 5 years old and want to go go go all the time, they dont have ADD, they are 5 years old and have energy!! If only I could be that age again!!

Must be because "Everywhere you turn someone has an 'add' kid. or they can't go near food, or grass, or dogs, or fresh air". And I can assure you that is most emphatically NOT pathetic, but it most definitely IS very hard to be a kid with ADD, ADHD, or food or environmental allergies. It is also very hard on their parents. Thanks so much for all the empathy and the really considerate words!
PS- PLEASE never breed.

Well, I don't think everyone whose child has an allergy or some kind of condition is making it up. I do think allergies are becoming more common, but this could be because we know more about them and are better at identifying them. Or it could be because of changes in our environment that make children more sensitive to certain substances.

As far as behavioral problems such as ADHD, diagnoses such as these are also becoming more common. Is it because we are better at identifying them or is it because the diagnosis is overapplied? You will see many arguments on both sides of this issue. As a children's therapist, I believe there are some children who are biologically predisposed to have a harder time focusing and controlling their behavior than others. In other cases, however, lack of structure and discipline on the part of the parent(s) results in a child whose behavior is difficult or out of control, and rather than deal with their own shortcomings as a parent, the parent finds a doctor who will diagnose the child as ADHD and give meds. Lots easier than dealing with your own issues. Just my opinion!

I don't know why anyone would want to make up an allergy or condition for their child. That just wrong. What I wouldn't give for my little girl not to have allergies and be normal. Why would a parent put their child through that willingly?!

Never heard of making up allergies, my daughter has SEVERE food allergies. We actually had to have blood tests (as early as when she was 4 months old). She would develop hives and severe asthma attacks every time she ate certain foods, so I have to disagree. Also, she had to be rushed to the ER after being around a newly adopted dog (that we had to return). I now carry an epi pen wherever we go. So, realize that not all cases are made up.

Number one, there is very little "fresh" air left and yes one CAN be allergic to the pullutants in our air. Yes one CAN be allergic to dog or cat dander (that is the flaky skin under their fur). YES people do have food allergies and yes grass can cause allergic reactions...you're the pathetic one dear.

my son's allergy to the sun is NOT made up. the hives and rash that he gets on exposed skin is proof of that. funny that if it was made up, the allergy medications would do nothing for him, yet they DO!!!

as for ADD... i agree that it is over diagnosed. however, it is not a MADE UP disease. some children DO have it!! just like some people have depression or other mental illness. some people can cope with mental illness without medication, but the majority need help.

i agree with the first answerer... research your crazy ideas before you post next time!!

I don't think that allergies and condition are 'made up', but I DO think that with newer medical tests more children are being diagnosed than ever before!
