You breastfeed as long as you both want to, at least until the baby is one year old and eating solid foods well. You will naturally breastfeed less as the baby starts to eat solid food more but that nutrition is important for your baby through the first year and even beyond. The American Academy of Pediatrics says at least until one and the World Health Organization recommends until two (that is especially true of children in areas where there isn't good food and water, less necessary in America, England and Australia etc).
As your baby approaches 6 months, you will introduce solid foods. As your baby approaches one year, you should talk to your doctor about nutrition etc and get some advice about weaning. Breastfeed as long as you want to, there will come a day all too soon when you would give anything to have that baby sit in your lap and look at you like that again, but she will be too big and too busy.

I'm going through this a little myself. I was planning on breastfeeding my son (who is 8 months old now) until he is 1 year old. But he has taken slowly to eating solid foods, and he is still breastfeeding a lot. I don't think he'll be ready to transition totally to solid foods by 1 year, so we're going to keep breastfeeding until he is really getting all of the nutrition he needs from solid foods and we'll just have to wait to see when that is.
Here in the U.S. it is recommended to breastfeed for at least one year, the World Health Organization says two years is best.
Many of my other mom friends continued to feed their babies the frozen breastmilk that they had stored as a supplement to their child's regular food (often mixed in rice cereal) until their supply was gone.
The real answer is--it is up to you and your baby! But if you can breastfeed for at least a year or two, your child will be healthier and less suseptible to many childhood diseases and allergies and will have a stronger immune system!

I think average, for the people who do breastfeed is 6 months. Any amount of breastfeeding is better than not breastfeeding at all. It may be tough at first because both her and the baby are going to be learning the best way to go about things but she should just fight through it because it is worth it. I planned on only breastfeeding for 6 months but my son enjoyed that bonding time and I did as well. Plus he never liked the taste of formula after getting the good stuff. He is 11 months old and is now just starting to take whole milk. I plan on having him weaned by 12-14 months, depending on his lead. Congrats on the baby boy and best of luck to you and your fiance in everything from the baby to the wedding planning!

it is different for every mom, and for every child. i breast fed my son for 8 months, then HE decided he didn't want me any more :( you are right in your question. you will breast feed less as babe gets more solids, but will probably still enjoy giving the breast at nap and bed time. most of my friends breast fed until baby was just over a year, and on to cows milk.

my son weaned himself off at 1 year. there are people who breastfeed until there child is 2 or older. it is something that is up to you, but just because ur child starts solids doesn't mean u need to stop. when u do stop nursing you will want to slowly stop but cutting out a feeding not just stopping it will hurt u.

Keep breast feeding as long as it is working for you and the child.
At least until age one but it is ok past that age too.

Usually you keep going until they're a year old. Sometimes longer, sometimes less. Some people say it is when the baby weans him/herself, I personally think a year is good. Then switch to cow's milk.
