WAY better that he go to school, get a degree, THEN go in as an officer.
As of now, as a sailor, he'll probably be sent to somewhere in the vicinity of the Gulf of Oman (near Iran).
The Navy or Naval reserve is safer than the Army or the Marines, buy not as safe as the Air Force. Still, these are uncertain times and school is always a wiser choice.

The Navy(Reserve) is much more safer than the Army or Marines. Those are the ones that are over there fighting for their lives,so he should be in good care in the Navy. Plus, there isn't much water near Iraq so he would be out of harm's way. The Navy is a good choice for him, I'm joining too.

At present, there's a very low chance of someone in the Navy being sent off to actually fight.
However... signing up means the person is willing to fight to defend the US's interests.
And... we've had less than 3500 US servicemen die in Iraq in the past 4+ years.... We've had an average of over 40,000 people die on US highways due to DUI EACH YEAR.
Your almost safer in combat than on the road.
*************
Note: There have been some Navy personnel who died in Iraq. (one was announced on the evening news last week) Not many... probably "SEAL" team members... But if you remember the USS Cole... even in port in supposedly safe harbor isn't guaranteed safety.
But then the supposedly safe World Trade Center turned out to be a target of islamofaciests....

Well, the only men and women that have died in combat in Operation: Iraqi Oi... I mean Operation Iraqi Freedom, have been Army and Marines. So I'd say your son is in good hands with the Navy. He'll be safe.
****And FreddHH wins the retard of year award for his DUI/war comparison.

My daughter and I researched this for her also. Once they finish their basic training then they only do weekend duty until they are done with College. After that - their *** belongs to the military - and since they could not assure me that she would not be sent into a combat zone we decided not to. My prayers are with you and your son...unfortunatley the US is always involved somewhere...in someone else's business.

MY SPOUSE IS ACTIVE DUTY NAVY, I'M PRIOR. AND HONESTLY IT DEPENDS ON HIS JOB. IF HE IS LIKE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD HE HAS A HIGHER CHANCE OF BEING SENT OUT WITH THE MARINES. BUT FOR THE MOST PART THE HARDEST THING IS DEPLOYMENT. WHERE HE SHOULD BE PERFECTLY SAFE. THE NAVY IS OVERALL A "SAFE" BRANCH. IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK TRUST ME. MY FAMILY FELT THE SAME WAY.

I wouldn't join while fighting Bush's war... They are even sending National Guard to fight. I have friends in the reserves who have done a few tours in Iraq...
