Both of those you mentioned don't bite as much as chis, maltese, yorkies, pekes. Stay away from the small yappy, nippy breeds. Bichons are a bit biger than shih tzus and neither breed sheds. Either should be a good child's dog.

The shih Tzu is a wonderful pet for children Check the shelter's or rescues. Also they are not as fragile as some small dogs. The shih Tzu breed have wonderful temperament's and do not bark much. I have one, he has been with 5yrs,8yrs 9 and 10yrs old children, he loves them. As long as the children know how to treat an animal.
However, they do require regular grooming.
You would not want any dog from a shelter that had in any way been mistreated, for children. I have read that the Bichon Frise is a very energetic breed.

Bichons are sturdy little dogs and good with all people, including children. Shi Tzus, on the other hand, can be temperamental, so I wouldn't recommend one for a household with children. Make sure that your children respect the dog and don't tease it, and that you're in a position to give a dog the time and energy it deserves. Consider obedience school for any dog you buy, since this will help both you and the dog with behavior--your 13-year-old can participate too. Check your local animal shelter, which is where we got our two bichons. Also check out smallpawsrescue.org, a group dedicated to bichon rescue.

A small dog may not be the best choice. Not only are they delicate, but small dogs can be higher strung than some slightly larger breeds.
You may wish to go to a no-kill shelter or local humane society to inquire about their animals - also check any local rescue group that fosters animals; you'll have a clearer sense of how the dog reacts to living in a home, being around children, etc. http://www.petfinder.org/ is a great site to start looking.
That you're looking for a cheap dog is a little worrisome - all dogs are going to have vet bills, food bills, and general upkeep. You should be sure you can afford the dog before you get it. You shouldn't be in a position of trying to decide whether to take your dog to the vet or pay a light/gas/grocery bill.
good luck.

That's absolutely now not fair for your phase. Your Friday night time together with your son is in general out. And your Sunday is almost always reduce brief too. Is it the shuttle you dislike or the time spent along with your son is reduce brief? If it can be the travel, then i'd have her reimburse you for the mileage for the 2 further hours you need to pressure. And does she work on Sunday evenings that she cannot meet you half approach then? Who works on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings? I do not suppose you should attempt to curb the little one support, since what if this challenge changes, and then you definitely have got to go altering the little one help once more, which if that is completed via the courts, is most likely a bother. I would ask for the mileage repayment first. If she would not agree to any suggestions at all, then i'd go through the court docket system.

in general small dogs arent good for small children, they tend to be very low tolerance for the rough play a child does. A good dog for the kid might be a beagle or westie. But always remember that all play between the dog and child must be supervised. Teach the 5 year old respect toward sthe dog and you should have no problems.

Small dogs are generally not good for children. They tend to be snappy and short-tempered. You'd be much better off with a retriever (golden or lab) because they are wonderful with children. They are a bigger dog and require regular walking but they are wonderful pets. You can find them at an animal shelter or in an ad in the paper. You could look online for a rescue society for the breed.

I agree that smaller dogs aren't good for children. I also agree that adopting an animal is better than buying one. There are far too many homeless animals out there that need a loving family to take them in.
For families with small kids, I like golden retrievers. They are very intelligent and extremely gentle. Here is a link with some great info. I adopted my golden through a rescue organization in Oklahoma.

I hate to say this.. but if you want a well breed dog. in great health.. then you will not find a "cheap dog" .. back yard breeders and pups for bucks breeders are what you are going to find. As long as your children a well minded and will not mistreat or be rough. I would think any small breed would work well You just have to look around and see what you like.I personally am partial to chihuahuas. smooth and long. But you must look for a great temperment in that breed. especially with kids.

that's never honest on your area. Your Friday night inclusive of your son is particularly plenty out. And your Sunday is probable cut back short too. Is it the holiday you dislike or the time spent inclusive of your son is cut back short? If it truly is the holiday, then i might have her reimburse you for the mileage for the two extra advantageous hours you will possibly desire to force. And does she paintings on Sunday evenings that she would have the ability to't meet you a million/2 way then? Who works on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings? i do no longer think of you will possibly desire to attempt to cut back the new child help, simply by fact what if this occasion variations, after which you will possibly desire to flow changing the new child help lower back, which if it is finished in the time of the courts, is probable a worry. i might ask for the mileage reimbursement first. If she does not comply with any concepts in any respect, then i might flow in the time of the court equipment.
