My cat is three going on four years old. Over the winter he was a healthy plump cat. In the last three months he has dropped weight. Nothing in his diet has been changed. I can put both my hands around his lower body and touch fingers. He seems healthy. He's always running around being playful. He shows no signs of being sick. He also was the runt of his litter. He's smaller than a normal sized house cat. He's been declawed and nuetered over two years ago. Any suggestions or personal experiences would be appreciatied. I'm contimplating on going to vet.

There are any number of reasons your cat could be losing weight. It could be anything from parasites to something more serious.

Have you checked your food to make sure it isn't on the recall list? The last update was 5/24/07. The ASPCA keeps the latest info on their site. http://www.aspca.org

I would recommend you schedule a visit to the vet in the very near future and be sure to bring along a stool sample so they can test for worms.

It may be nothing at all, but you would feel terrible if you didn't act and something happed to him.

If you're contemplating it, it's time to do it!

When I read the title of this question I was expecting to read about an older cat, because suddenly becoming skinny is common in older cats as a result of hyperthyroidism. Still, it could also be possible in younger cats.

I would certainly take this cat to the vet - you say he seems healthy, but losing weight for no apparent reason is not a sign of a healthy cat. At the very least the vet can advise you on nutrition, but he may well have an underlying condition, I would get it checked out.

You say you can put both hands around your kitty's lower body and touch fingers. That does not sound like the cat is too thin. He may have been too heavy before. Can you easily feel his ribs? You should always be able to feel the ribs but he should not feel too bony. If he is allowed to roam outside, it may not be a bad idea to check him for worms. At any rate as long as he is still playful and eating well I would not worry myself sick, but a checkup is never a bad idea. If he has not been to the vet in the last year I would definitely take him in.

They usually put on weight in the winter and loose it during the spring and summer. Do you know about all of the ''tainted'' cat food out there?could you have fed your cat some? It wouldn't hurt to take your cat to the Vet and have a simple blood test done to see if there is a problem with its kidneys.I wish the best for you and your cats!

Take the cat to the vet. Rapid weight loss is a sign that something is wrong, even if the cat appears fine otherwise. Cats are very good at masking their pain.

I would definately call your vet and get the cat in. A lot of weight in a short period of time is not a good thing. Something could seriously be wrong. Sometimes cats will act as if nothing's wrong. It's their defense mechanism. But you should always take things like this seriously!!!!

My advice to you is....YES!!! Anytime an animal loses weight without a regular exercise regimen, that's a warning sign of something amiss. It might not be life threatening, and may be easily dealt with w/ medication, but, just like people, an unprovoked loss of weight is your body telling you something. Same for cats. GO to vet soon.

I would take him in to be looked at. If he lost a noticable amount of weight in a short amount of time, he needs to be seen.

Anytime you even think a situation warrants a vet trip, do it. I know its hard with cats because they often act normal even if they are ill. I also know what a pain it is to bring a cat in to the vet, but I think your little guy needs to go in.

Definitely go to the vet and have him checked out - he does sound thin. That said, I had one cat that always got really thin in the summer and plumped up again in winter. She lived to age 19. But best to check it out.

No more contemplation - you need to go to the vet. This is not normal. Weight loss to that extreme needs vet care ASAP. Call the vet TODAY and get him in ASAP.
