I know how to make them stop running on startup, but how do I remove them from that list so I can de-clutter it?

you need to use the registry editor to remove old entries from that list of now redundant items.

start the registry editor by going to 'start' > 'run' then typing regedit and clicking 'ok' to run the program.

navigate to the following entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Shared Tools \ MSConfig \ Startupreg

delete any folder which exists within this folder, and any entries that appear in the right hand panel.

now do the same for this location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Shared Tools \ MSConfig \ Startupfolder

the unticked entries in msconfig's startup tab should be gone.

EDIT:
he doesn't want to know how to disable programs at startup:
"I know how to make them stop running on startup"

he wants to remove old entries from the list:
"how do I remove them from that list so I can de-clutter it"

please read the question first people, whether you're answering or just handing out the thumbs up/thumbs down - all you level 5/6/7's that gave the same answer as the guy above me should know better....

click on start > run type msconfig. Press ok. Click on Startup tab. Uncheck names of those programs there that you do not need at startup. (These settings are reversible, if you uncheck something and later decide that it is necessary at startup; you can always come back and change the settings again.) Press Apply. Press close. Click on restart to reboot the computer. After reboot system configuration message window appears . Check the box that says do not display this again, and press ok to close the box.

You can't. The Startup tab of MSConfig shows all the applications that can possibly start along with Windows. The marked ones DO start, while the unmarked ones don't. You can remove them from the list only by uninstalling those software from your computer.
