I have a friend who owns a pet store and she sometimes puts fake eggs into the nest when she wants to put the fertile ones in an incubator rather than lettthe mom sit on them. Sometimes mom birds aren't good parents and you need to intervene a little.

If you can not get pot eggs then paint with emulsion some marbles or large beads. Why not let your bird have another go at sitting her eggs ,and see how she copes with rearing the young , you are taking on a big task trying to hand feed and rear Cockatiel young. Edit normally Cockatiels do not use nesting materials all they require is about 3 inches of Peat or fine soil in the nest box. If you're breeding birds, it can be a good idea to temporarily remove the first eggs until the clutch is produced. It makes sure that they all hatch at about the same time. Putting a fake egg in while the real one is out of the nest stops the parent getting freaked out.

You would get a fake egg as a practice round for your cockatiel. When My female layed eggs she cracked them and distroyed them. So when she layed an egg a few days later, I replased it with a strong fake egg. She tryed to break it but she couldn't. So she now thinks she cant crack the egg. Now my tiel takes care of her real eggs nicely intil they hatched.

Putting fake eggs in a nestbox shows the birds where to lay.

My guess to this would be that they may have a distressed female cockateil that either is laying eggs and destroying them and getting upset; laying eggs and keeping on laying eggs and getting tired; or maybe they just want to stop one breeding by producing an egg for her, so she doesnt stress herself out trying to produce the egg herself

Sometimes putting a fake egg in with the birds will induce them to start laying. I have seen that done with chickens before.

Because it can save a bird's LIFE.
