I have a step-daughter that comes to visit her father and I every summer. She will be 12 in August. We get along really great, but when it comes to her taking a shower it is a real battle. It is an argument every day when trying to get her to shower or brush her teeth. I just don't know what to do. It does not matter if her dad tells her or if I do. I would love some suggestions on how to make it easier. Thanks :-)

Also, she has braces, so she NEEDS to brush her teeth often.

i would sit down and talk to her about it. she is probably starting to admit she likes boys, so use that on her. boys like it when girls smell clean. you could also buy her some special body washes and shampoos. take her shopping with you and get her to pick out her favorite. make a deal that when she uses them up, you will take her to get some more. do the same with a new tooth brush and tooth paste. let her choose. this might make her enjoy her bathing time a little more.

good luck!

This is a no brainer, when you consider a girl having poor hygene, that is a red flag that something is wrong, you paint a very pretty and perfect picture of a non custodial parent with a step parent involvement, if what you say is true, then there is one speck on the screen of this pretty picture, the mom, this child has to give her mom some hope that all is not well in camelot, going back home ungroomed and washed puts just a little dirt on your white suit, this is an indication of something deeper, look to the mom, if she does not show you both hands, you can be sure she has "The Blade Behind her back" so to speak :) good luck

Why won't she bathe? Does she have an explanation? Is she uncomfortable for some reason? Find this out first, there may something simple you can do. At our house, if our son won't take a shower, we don't go anywhere or do anything. He can't leave the house or watch TV until he is clean.
Tell her no more sodas or sweets until she can prove that she's ready to take care of her teeth. Does she know that those are the only ones she is going to get and that it offends others when they smell her bad breath?
Good luck!

Perhaps you could have her father contact the mother and ask how she gets her to take a shower or it there's some other problem of why she won't bathe.

Stay out of it. Let Dad do the parenting. You have much to lose if you try to parent a child that is not yours, emotionally, financially and legally.
