"$2.70 per gallon by the end of summer"
damn, i just paid $3.36 for regular!
The majority of the people arent enthusiast, and they will all be in the market for a high mpg car, the enthusiast will do a couple of things. like me, drive the car less. my custom car is a gas guzzler, and im going to be driving it less this summer. last year, i drove it to flordia from indiana, this year, im driving the old ladies civic hybrid.
the people that pay for the suvs, pay a gas guzzler tax. Thats perfect, because you give the ability for the suv owners to buy a car they want, by having them pay more. this is the only thing that should ever happen. I wish we could do the same with high emission cars. For enthusiast like myself, we would be able to import high emission cars for a fee...
I see no problem giving tax breaks to people who buy hybrids, i see no problem with gaz guzzlers having to pay a tax, but i have a problem with the government telling me what car i can or cant buy because of the fuel mileage.

The gas price thing does get personal as evidenced by the answers here, as a small example. However, it's not about us against each other and what I drive and what you drive, but really about the price of a gallon of fuel. And, incidentally, as gas prices increase, so do the prices of all other petroleum based goods, and so does the cost of transporting those goods and all others.
The real issue is that the fuel industry is price gouging and getting away with it, and the facts show that people are not really changing their driving habits or vehicles to offset the increased expenditure of fuel.
The fuel industry is attempting to gloss the pricing over by presenting their side about refinery breakdowns and closures. Would it be considered true and logical that these industry giants had no idea that there would be required repairs and upgrades after the refineries were built? Do we not expect to paint a house, put a roof on, and do other work after a period of ownership? Of course we do, and so do all industries with brick and mortar.
The refineries have set aside all the needed money to handle breakdowns, upgrades and closures. And, if there is a catastrophe, they have insurance to pay for that.
What about the cost of raw oil? The real question is why is it going up in price now? What changed? When did it change? Who changed it? Why? The answer is greed, greed, greed. I have yet to see any truth coming out of the current administration, nor have there been any accurate, truthful articles or reports as to the TRUTH as to why we are paying high prices for fuel.
As to your original question-unless we as country fight back those in power will keep on doing what they do best, manipulating us for fun and profit. How do we counter that? The truth is we will not until we stand up for the rights of the American citizen and together determine the truth and then take action to change the direction. It appears that we Americans do little more than talk about what we do not like. Is there a way to change the gas pricing? Yes. But only with a united front determined to stand for each other, whether we get 6 miles to a gallon or sixty.
Pick one major brand and stop buying from them until they come to their knees. It won't cost us a dime, but could well break them. They need to know that we are not a nation of sheep, but instead righteous warriors that will stand and fight side by side for a common cause, for the good of all, each other. If we do not they will keep on keepin' on and we will keep on payin'. I'm ready! Are you?

I agree with all you said
BUT
Civic hybrids will give you average 40 MPGs and Priuse would give you 48 to 50 MPG average
the only vehicles with above 60 MPG is
the insight or small engine motorcycles

If gas prices are such a stress to you, then get a bus pass or buy a Schwinn.
I can't fit 3 kids in that shoebox/ridiculous-looking Prius - and I'm not the only one who has to consider that - so don't expect people to stop buying SUV's.

Sorry I need my gas guzzling toys:
I have owned many of these V8 beasts and I would never consider giving it up. As well as many other people we just drive when we have to, and thats it.
Buying a car just because it will save a few bucks at the pump makes no comparison to staying alive after a wreck with one of these little gas savers.
They are unsafe - unreliable, and they are ugly as hell.

that somewhat is an uncertain one to respond to. For one, smiling in the face of hopelessness can take 2 varieties; it may propose self belief, bravery, and optimism for the destiny. yet in addition, it truly is a lie. to grin once you're depressing can propose you're mendacity to your self and others. real heroics may be to show the variety you experience to the worldwide without hesitation, to allow your real opinion out into the open, and to make it ordinary which you're feeling the variety you do and why. a grin may be a teach of self belief, yet whilst it truly is a lie, it truly isn't any longer heroic. the real which skill relies upon on the placement and the strategies-set of the guy. enable them to be the decide.
