My date recounted this to me. The taxi driver was an old man. When they got to their destination, and my date found that he didn't have enough cash, he paid whatever he had, took his bags and said he'll be right back with the change. The old man snatched and pulled at his bag and never allowed him access to his own bag - said he needed money first. My date, shocked with the rudeness said "you are a jerk" before he left. And ofcourse, no tip.

The taxi driver's behavior was indeed shockingly rude, according to me. But am not sure, whether saying what he said was justified.

Another question: Should I lodge a complaint with the taxi service about this driver?

No. Your date should. In writing. He should detail exactly what happened and give the cab number or badge number.

That is unacceptable behavior.

But so is calling someone a jerk. It's possible that this guy has been ripped off before and that's why he acted that way. Even though that's not an excuse, your date should not have called him names. That's a good way to start a fight. What if the old guy had mental problems and a gun???
You never know with people. It's best to just let it go. Calling names only makes people angrier. It doesn't solve the problem.

Why would YOU lodge a complaint and not your date? He can call an old man a jerk but not make a complaint if necessary ?

The reason the Taxi driver wanted to hold the bag was because people run off without paying quite often, especially in the City, where they can go inside the building and just disappear.

Your date should have told the driver he was short a little bit of money and that he would leave his bags in the car(as collateral) until he comes back with the rest of the fare.

No, the driver was in the right. Sure, your date *CLAIMED* he would return the rest of the money he owed, he probably fully *INTENDED* to get the rest of the money.... but words ain't money, and there are plenty of liars out there who would make the same promises your date made.
There is no reason the driver should be expected to trust a total stranger, and requesting that your date leave some form of collateral - in this case, his bags - is a perfectly reasonable and fair request. Your date should have left the bags (or his driver's license or credit card) with the driver as a sign of good faith, went in, got the money, paid the driver, and then retrieved his bags.
I'm pretty sure the taxi company would say the same - I mean, would you expect McDonald's to let you walk out of their restaurant with a Happy Meal you've only half paid for? Put yourself in the driver's shoes.
I think your date owes the driver an apology and a tip.

Your date is the jerk. He was committing a criminal offense, and the driver was trying to stop him.

Leaving a taxi without paying the full fare is theft/fraud. It's illegal. For your date not to understand that makes him not only a jerk, but stupid too.

The fact that you also don't see that the driver was NOT rude, but in the right, well, that says a lot about you too.

Yes, the driver could have handled it better, maybe, but from your story, your date was "fleeing the scene". The driver's only recourse was to grab the nearest thing he could to try to stop your date.

You should commend the driver for his quick thinking. You should go to an anti-theft program yourself, and take your date with you.

Many cab drivers are immigrants, so could there have been a language issue? Maybe he thought your date was trying to run off without paying, if he didn't fully understand what he had said. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he may have misunderstood. I don't think combating percieved rudeness with more rudeness (the jerk comment) accomplishes too much, but..... whatever.

Honestly, I don't think that the taxi driver was wrong. Your date still owed the driver money. If he was alone with him, then he needed to leave something with the driver to reassure him that he would actually be back with the money. If he took everything with him, then he could have just not gone back to pay the rest of the bill.

Your date was in the wrong.

The driver was just trying to make sure he didn't leave without paying. He could have done it less rudely, but he had a point.

This is a non-issue. The old guy has been ripped off before. Hence his behavior. Your boyfriend had good intentions and then, was too verbal...NO do not report the driver. They wouldn't care anyway.

And what is OLD in your mind?
