No it's not progress but people stay in it because they are afraid of change. Staying in any system that is no longer providing its original purpose, means that the original purpose has been changed to just being a security blanket for those in it, and that's about it.

you mean capatalism? Democracy? The entire American idea of how a country is supposed to be run? In a sense that poor get poorer and rich get richer? Yahh, id sayy it needs some tweaking.
