Why do they do it? Do they really believe that they can convince people to 'join' a religion? How do you get rid of them?

Ali, I really didn't want this to get into a religious debate, but seriously, you people are respectful to us? Knocking on OUR doors, coming to OUR homes, pushing YOUR beliefs onto US? Ok then.

I do what I do with all unwanted visitors at my door. I don't open the door, calling out loudly, "I'm sorry but I just can't open the door." They may decide that I haven't the strength to open the door, or that I'm not dressed, or that I'm ill. The beauty of the statement is that it is completely ambiguous. Frankly, I don't care what they think as long as they go away.

A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "recruit" a householder, or get him to "join". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!

That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.

(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

They are not there to make you join their religion! They are out to save your soul... they want you to except Jesus as your savior... that is their mission... to save all they can so they will be welcomed into the Kingdom of God... So no one is left behind in that "Blink of an eye". Invite them in and challenge their teachings... ask them what they are there for... educate yourself, what would it hurt? Or you could hang road kill outside your door... That detours a lot of people... In-laws especially! It may attract vultures though!

When I was younger and they came to our door I would answer and tell them I was a devil worshiper, and they came even more. (I really wasn't) When I got older I gave them a chance and ended up studying with them for about 1 year. In my opinion and personal experience they are the most loving and caring people I've met even throughout my experiences in Christianity. They go door to door cause in the bible it states to go and spread the good news, and that's what they're doing. You can just expect people to go and attend a service they go door to door to try to teach you and encourage you to go and learn. It's just like any other religion that has rally's or missions trips they just do it locally first.

We're Protestant and when I was younger, I remember my dad putting a door knocker on our front door that had a bible verse on it. We were never bothered again. They would get to the door, see the knocker and turn right around.

My boyfriend once answered the door naked when he knew there were Jehovah Witnesses at the door. They asked him to please put some clothing on while they speak to him, he said no, I'm a nudist (even though he's not). They left pretty quickly.

Myself, I would just say, "I respect your beliefs, but I have my own, so please respect that, goodbye!" and shut the door.

They do it because they're required to. I don't know if they think that they can convince people or how often they're actually successful. I think it's one of those things that people decide on their own and they don't need people coming door to door. The worst was on campus because they would just follow you rather than taking no for an answer. I usually tell them I'm happy with my church, thanks, and I have somewhere I need to be and go on my way.

Buy a BB gun. Just a normal pistol. And when they call go onto balcony/terrace/window that overlooks the front door. Aim,then Aim some more and then POW!... i mean jeez no offense but if they keep knocking...its like knock down ginger but they dont run away.

i have a complete discussion with them everytime they come around. I no longer sit and listen to their bs and then throw out the flyers. No, I ask them, so you are trying to get me to convert to a sexist religion where i have no freedom. Does it make sense to you that your all good god would do so and so. How does this statement in your bible make any sense to you? We actually have a discussion of what it is that they are selling me. They eventually give up and go.

I'll tell you what I don't like is coming home to discover that my young daughter who can read just enough to get the basic idea of things is now terrified because some JW left a doom and gloom, end of the world brochure rolled up in my door handle. She was too young to understand that somewhere in the midst of all that tragedy and death was some little message of hope. All she saw was pictures of the president, death and disaster!

She was terrified from the pictures of mushroom clouds, bombed out buildings and bloody people wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out what just happened. (Of course they are all cartoon drawings, which they are so famous for), but that sort of material shouldn't be left around where any child can happen upon it. -----Shame on them!

As far as 'getting rid of them' it is difficult. If you challenge your door knockers, they will go back and "report the challenge" in their meetings and often send more seasoned door knockers to win the debate with you next time.

I suggest you call your local J.W. meeting hall. Talk with a leader there and tell them to put your address on a "DO NOT VISIT LIST." Just know that you and your home will become the product of a serious showering of prayer.

They may even begin hitting your neighbor's homes with a fervor because they will interpret your call as a "spiritual battle within the neighborhood." If they can convert your neighbors then you may, feeling convicted, come along for the ride as well. They are a pretty intense cult who have hijacked the name of Jesus in order to lend some sort of credence to their self serving ideals.

So, Ali (Below) don't tell me that I allow my child to watch television of that sort, when in fact we do not! We did not even have cable for many years and to this day we watch the "food network" and "Home and Garden" channel if we turn the thing on at all.

Secondly, when Jesus shared His love with the little children, I am certain He didn't horrify them by talking about how the Romans were going to rip the skin off His back, drive nails through his hands and feet, or pierce his side with a spear. I am certain He didn't tell them about Nero dipping Christians in oil and using them as torches to light his garden parties. He shared His LOVE with them.

JW emphasis is upon world disaster and corrupt leaders, hence the magazine's title, "THE WATCHTOWER" you are all "watching" for the end of the world, which your organization has predicted in the past only to discover that you had a set of false prophets in your midst, as you do now, and we all know what the Scriptures have to say about "false prophets!"

PS My Pastor never passes an offering plate. He never asks for money. There is a box in the back if any of us are inclined to present an offering to the Lord, which is entrusted to our Pastor's care through his board of elders and directors. So, again, do not make assumptions like that. 1. Assumptions proved false do not help your argument when you are using them to support your position, and 2. You end up looking pretty silly.

I agree with Vanessa M. They are doing what they feel is good work. There is no contest on who they can convert and who does not. They are taught to spread " the good word" and it is up to you on whether o not you accept what they are preaching. At the end of the day they can lay down with knowing that they did their duty to give you the knowledge that was shared with them. Their job is done, They have served their purpose and will do so until a change in life occurs!
