My mother has a blockage in her colon. CT was unable to determine the exact nature, and an attempted colonoscopy was unsuccesful. She needs surgery, but is extremely opposed because her own mother (at the age of 85; my mother is only 73) died following a similiar surgery. My mother is getting weaker by the day, as she is only able to eat small amounts of soft or liquid food. She is also fearful of possibly having a colostomy bag; as she has always been somewhat vain and was very attractive and active for her age. Please, what can I tell her that would reassure her into getting the treatment she needs.

Medicine and surgery have taken a big turn for the better since your grandmother's surgery. Even if she has to have a colostomy, chances are it could be reversed once her colon has had time to heal. She needs to do what the doctor recommends. She is only going to get worse if it's not taken care of. It's time to put "vanity" aside. She will be just as attractive and active if she did have to have a colostomy. Nobody has to know but her and her family. The doctors will take excellent care of her. You cannot wait too long on things of this nature as the colon will start to die and then she will REALLY have a big problem on her hands. I would take the surgery over death ANY day. It's done routinely and is as safe as any surgery. Good luck...you and your mother will be in my thoughts.

She will die without surgery. I know for many colostomy seems terrible. The chances of a colostomy being perminate is increasing by the day. This is a big deal and you should call a mental health professional immediatly. Get the whole family together and tell her you are not prepared for her to die and that this surgery is very common and she will live a very active life afterward. There is no magic way to convince her, get a professional in there.

surgery has come along way! what folks died of back then, usually will be just fine today!

sometimes regardless, a patient will need a colostomy bag-especially during recovery of the bowel. more often than not, a colostomy bag is only temporary.

you need to explain to your mother that without the surgery she will die and that she has a better chance of living longer provided she opts for surgery.

my grandfather in law who is 89 this year just was able to get rid of his colostomy bag-it took less than 2 years before the doctors decided his bowel was healed.

blockage could mean a twisted bowel. there is no reason why she should opt for suffering a slow death.

tell her the truth. tell her it will be okay!

They speak approximately what ever they desire. I have heard a few speak approximately vehicles, residences, holidays. The inform jokes. They speak approximately the present instances, historical instances. They speak to one another and spot how all people is doing. It is what ever they desire. Some are quiet and insist silence once they paintings. It varys.
