One of my pet peeves is going to a restaurant and paying a 125% markup on a bottle of wine and then having the wine served in stubby IKEA glasses that don't allow the wine to express its flavours and aromas. Good quality stemware is so affordable these days, there is no excuse for that. Why can't restaurants take more pride in their service?

Another thing that bugs me is when they do have a few sets of nice stemware, but keep them in the back for VIP customers while everyone else gets the junky glasses.

customer service is definitely not on the top of the list for a lot of restaurants. i cant answer your question. i can only agree with you that it is a problem. its the little touches that make me want to return to a restaurant. this is why i don't go out that often.

Ok, are we talking good stemware or great stemware. Casual restaurants only purchase cheap stemware in bulk so they have an unending supply. Remember, these are casual restaurants not private clubs. Alot of kids eat at these restaurants.
Now if you want good or great stemware, I suggest you go to restaurant a bit more adult friendly.
Unfortunately, you can't bring your own stemware into restaurants unless they are baby bottles (so thats a bad idea).
I Love a good wine but sometimes you just have to make the best and enjoy the evening and company.

It's pretty obvious to me that you have never worked in or ran a restaurant.
The glassware that you'd like to have in a restaurant may be affordable, but a restaurant would have to buy a LOT of it. Do you know how much loss and breakage happens in a restaurant? A small restaurant will order 200 glasses (of one kind). If you really want to get technical and get everything you'd want, you'd need at least 4 different glasses for your different wines. That's 800 glasses. I promise you that in just a few short weeks the restaurant would lose at least 25% of those glasses due to breakage or loss.
You're paying for service at a restaurant. The more you're paying there, the better service you're going to get. Drop 50 per person and you'll get better glassware. That kind of restaurant can afford it.

Yeah, I agree. It also angers me when the glass has water spots all over it. Another peeve is having a server that doesn't know how to open a wine bottle and fumbles around with it until they finally yank the cork out with a loud pop.

I'm not sure where you're from, but around here everything is Reidel crystal. If it works for the Mondavis, it's fine with me. However, I used to have Libbey wine glasses at my restaurant. Why? Because they were cheap and nobody really drank wine then and the dish boy would probably break them anyway.

When I eat out and a restaurant treats me that way. I finish my meal and just never go back and they all my friends that the restaurant is an overpriced joke.

If it bothers you that much why not bring your own glass to the restaurant.I am sure they wont mind.
they don't take as much as pride in service these days because people will come back if they enjoy the cuisine

It's not so much the cheap glasses that get me, its when it has some skanky chic's lipstick still on the rim. That is my biggest pet peeve.
