I was born in a muslim family but I never practiced islam or study about it until I was 19.. Except for a few forceful courses I had to take at elementry school. But I decided to read the Quran to know for myself whether it's my religion really or not. After reading for a few days, I decided this is the truth from my God and ever since I study it, I ask question, but I also try to practice it as much as I can.. I don't think it's very important to say the shahada in order to become a muslim. As long as you believein Quran, all of the profits, and the message they brought, you are considered a muslim in my view. Good luck and check out this site for some great info and a good translation of Quran.

I studied Islam for two years for the same reason, to find out the truth about Islam.
While I am still not an expert, here is my opinion.
I Don't believe that Muhammad was a Prophet, however, I think Islam could be a fine Religion IF they had a system of leadership in place to control the Radical Imam's.
As it is, the Imam's can preach anything they wish and translate the Quran as they wish, because there is no leadership to keep them in line, SOME preach anger and hate to keep themselves in power.
Good Luck in your search!
Peace!

I am a Christian and I had the view that all Muslims were militant because of Fox news, etc. Then I had a college professor that was a muslim and I was quite inspired by his dedication to his faith..it was peaceful and meaningful to him... I even attended a service at a Mosque and that was cool as well...don't believe what you see on the news, not all muslims are militant...look at Christianity (a good example) not all of us are the same
