The generally accepted rule is that if it is a man and woman approaching each other, the man should stand to the right and let the woman pass.

If it is in a work atmosphere, a man should generally let a woman pass. However, it is acceptable for the subordinate to stand aside and let their superior pass also.

If it two men or two woman,in a social setting or on the street, then the younger of the two should stand to the right and let the older one pass.

If it is two men or two woman of approximately the same age and position, then both parties should move slightly to their respective rights to give enough room for both to pass.

But always move to your right. If both people follow that rule, then nobody should bump.

Just like when driving- to the right at least here in the U.S.
My daughter just got back from Italy and she said that they all just bang into one another and don't give a darn who it is.
They run over each other with baby carriages and everything!! I was surprised by that.
I knew that they bumped into Americans in Montreal years ago and squeezed them off of the sidewalk, but I thought that was just the French being rude.
Sometimes, I hate to admit it, but I do what others do- I pretend I don't see them and look away or I simply stop in my tracks and move over a little, but make the other person take responsibility also so that they have to move over as well.
People are so rude- especially in crowded malls here in MA.
From a teen- I will not take the disrespect, and I make it so they have to move. They are so unaware of their own personal space or refuse to recognize it.

That's so funny to me that you asked! I'll tell you why -- I'm predominately left-handed, but am ambidextrous as well --so needless to say I sometimes experience a moment of confusion with my lefts & rights. When I walk down the street & need to move to one side, 99% of the time I move to the LEFT, even though I KNOW I should move to the right! You wouldn't believe how many folks have huffed & puffed & sighed in exaxperation at me, despite how hard I try to move in the right direction (no pun intended)! P.S. When I use a knife & fork to eat -- I usually end up switching the utensils btwn both hands several times until I 'remember' which is the most comfortable for me.

You should move to whatever side you would drive on.

In other words, if you live in a country where you drive on the right side of the road, step to your right. If, however, you live in a country where you drive on the left, step to the left.

this is why there are so many car accidents!

Same rules apply as driving in the US. Stay on the right side. Now if you are in another country - you are on your own.

Each one takes their right....

You walk on the right, he/she walks to their right...
