as opposed to, like, a big corporate farm where they raise a lot of stuff? Why?

Factory farms are so much better because the animals are locked inside cages and just fed grain. That way they don't poop outside and the poop can be cleaned up and its not pollution.

Smaller farms are the backbone of the Amish country, and if you check I believe their farms have the highest production rate in the nation - much higher than the mega farms. Many only plow with mules and a horse, but they work (the whole family ...) physically much harder than agribiz farmers on their acreage. They also farm SMART to get high yields and multiple crops per season.

Personally I prefer to buy locally grown produce and will pay more for organic over imported or mega farm any day - and I am not wealthy. If we lose small family farms, we lose a major component of our society and our economy and nutritional independence (no, I am NOT a farm family member or from a farm community - I just see the reality ...). Next US commodity deficit - FOOD, not oil. Listen up!

Ofcourse they are made up of people who care for their land and who are concerned with what kind of farm their children will inherrit

And so they will follow sustainable methods or at least be open to education along those lines ,

Small family farming plant for the quality of life and the family as well as for the market ,resulting in more bio diversity

Big corporate farming is only concerned with todays profit and has destroyed vast territories
turning them into desserts, always planting mono cultures

Yes, because corporate farms generally use more chemicals to promote growth and as pesticides and herbicides. This is especially true of factory farms that produce animals or animal products.

No, the large farms make much better and efficient use of all resources to produce higher yields of crops. They can do more with less.
