i wouldn't use a public defender to contest a jaywalking ticket. most public defenders only work hard on really serious crimes or high profile cases where they stand to make a name for themselves if they win a acquittal. if you can afford to hire a lawyer, by all means don't hesitate. and please stop driving while you are impaired before you kill yourself or someone else.

Usually public defenders don't give you the same type of quality legal work that a regular attorney would. Nothing against public defenders, because many of them are good attorneys with their own private practice and just do public defender work as a service to the community. But they tend to have a case load larger then regular lawyers and they often have rather difficult clients to deal with.
However, if it's your first DUI charge. any lawyer with half a brain will just get it knocked down to a large fine, probation and possibly a suspended license with a hardship for to and from work.

Probably depends upon the public defender. See if you can find some information on the public defender that is representing you. Best thing to do though is to hire a DUI lawyer. A DUI holds substantial fines and points not to mention the possibility of jail time etc. I wouldn't risk it.

Public Defender's and private attorneys are just like anyone else, some good, some bad and some in between. Private attorneys want to win to build a reputation. Public Defender's also want to win to build a reputation. The difference is with a private attorney, you pay them and you can choose them. With a Public Defender you get the one assigned to your case, like it or not. I have known hundreds of Public Defender's over the years and none of them are in the D.A.'s pocket. They work to protect your rights. They do not work for the courts. They also have resources available, that if you hired a private attorney, you would have to pay extra for out of your pocket. I'm an investigator with a Public Defender's Office.

a public defender is still sometimes in practice like training but sometimes it is all the same, it depends on who gets to be your defender you may get a very good one and save all those bucks, i know i would take my chance with one rather then defend myself. you may get a lawyer that was in practice for a long time. and even if you paid allot of money it wouldn't do you any good with a public defender you can get a dismiss maybe, it all depends on what lawyer is will to stand up for you in Court and act as your public defender you may get one that charges $300 dollars every hour or half hour if he or she is there when you call for one they will take your case because there is no trainee

It depends on the individual attorney. When my boss was public defender he made a great name for himself as public defender. However, all the others after him are just getting a paycheck. Good luck.

Often a public defender has much more experience in criminal law than any private attorney. It's like anything else; there are good ones and bad ones. Overall, my experience has been that the TYPICAL public defender works harder and is more knowledgeable than the TYPICAL private attorney. Your mileage may vary, however.

The public defender works for the court to clear the judges docket. What do you think? Can you say ," sell you down the river."

Probably not.
Most public defenders are in the prosecuter's hip pocket, although there are a handful of exceptions to this rule.
