My wife is going camping with my daughter in NC and I want to send my SW .38 Airwieght (hammerless, shooting hollow points with the +p loads) with her for protection and MY piece of mind.

Does anyone know a quick breakdown of the laws of NC as far as carry/transport goes. It will not be on her person, but 1) in the car when she travels and 2) in her tent at night.

I just don't want her jammed up in case she is stopped by LE for improper carry in the car.

Thanks for your help. I need a pretty speedy answer to this, as she is leaving today.

To clarify for the nice officer that responded, she does not have a CWP, (I do), and she will be traveling through georgia and florida, but I have a pretty good understanding of the laws of those states.

My main concern is about carrying in her vehicle. In the tent, at the campground, there should be no problem as it will be tucked away in a safe place and ready for use in the VERY UNLIKELY chance it is needed.

Boy, here's the irony of this situation. I'll bet the person that tires to rob, rape, murder, carjack, or otherwise harm my family hasn't given a single care about the carry laws Woah, I feel a soapbox comming up, let me get off this subject

You neglect to state whether you wife has a permit to carry and what state you're traveling from.

Most states have reciprocity with those states who honor their CCW laws. Check with your local law enforcement agency to see if your state maintains a reciprocity with the State of North Carolina.

If they do...and your wife maintains a valid CCW permit...there is no problem.

One note...if they are camping on a state or federal campground...insure there is no prohibition of firearms on the campground!

Best wishes.

I'm going to take your question 100% literally. You can carry the concealed handgun permit anywhere, even if handguns are unconditionally banned. What you mean to ask is what states will recognize the NC concealed handgun permit. The link below, from the NC Department of Justice is a list of states that currently recognize NC concealed handgun permits. NOTE: NC permit holders carrying handguns in these state would have the same rights as residents of those states with permits issued by those states. They may not be the same as the rights NC recognizes for permit holders in NC. It is wise to consult any state in which you intend to carry a handgun to be sure of their laws.

Without a permit your options are limited in terms of legally. You can have a gun in your car but it has to be unloaded and secured which doesn't make for great self-defense. I am not a lawyer but I doubt very much that your campsite is considered your home like a rented house or hotel room would, and also if you're camping in a national park you would have to have it unloaded and stored in your car regardless of if you had a permit or not. Note that if you're in a national FOREST you can carry a gun if you could otherwise carry a gun in that state, except in buildings.

Dont put her in that position...if she's stopped its a felony. NC gun laws are surprisingly more strict that even I thought.
