You could uninstall AVG and reinstall it or use Avast which is also an excellent free software. Here are others that you may want to consider installing. All are free.

Can you list for us what viruses or attacks you are having problems with? AVG is an excellent virus scanner is normally 100% effective on protecting from viruses. It does NOT, however, protect against other types of attacks, such as spyware and hackers.
Besides AVG, you need to have a spyware scanner. Try Skybot Seek&Destroy which you can get for free from http://download.com
Also you need to good firewall. You will find Zone Alarm also for free at http://download.com
Add those to your AVG and it will improve your level of protection.

aVg does not do well as others in comparison tests 100% efficacy claimed by other answerer makes me wonder.i had avg in half an hour my PC was infected.The best defense is to have an OS that is virus free and is free to download :
