They are one and the same, Mechanical versions used to be called self winding watches, Modern versions contain a generator and a rechargeable battery to run the quartz movement.

I understand them to be the same. I have an old Gruen my mother bought for me when I was 16. I opened the back to see how it worked. Mine have this half-moon weight and as I move my arm it will spin in either direction and wind the watch in the same direction regardless of the direction of spin. Actually interesting how it work.
