Mine is a sound in abnormal Chicago nature...it would be the raccoons (yep in the city, and there are a LOT of them) that climb on the roof and break the gutters down, and tear the roof up and get in the attic, and scratch, run and bump overhead, and make animal noises in the walls. The destruction is bad enough, but the noise is utterly nerve-wrecking!!!! Especially in the middle of the night!

Mine is those 17 year Cicadas that are now maturing in my State. Darn, they are loud!

I lived in a rural area during my formative years and I am accustomed to crickets, owls and even cow being butchered, but those darn "Katy-Dids" as the Cicadas are known where I live are maddening.

They are so loud and plentiful that I have heard of them ruining a wedding not only by their loud sounds, but jumping on an ice scuplture to where it appearred black (guess they missed the coolness of their underground nest or something to flock to the nearest cold soure they found).

The provider has now refused to do ANY OUTDOOR wedding ice sculptures for the next 6 month as the cicadas are in season again; was just too horrified and financially devistated after the incident (people wanted their money back and he concurred and gave it back to them).

Mosquitos buzzing in my ear would be annoying. But other than that, I like the sounds out in the wilderness.

I was going to say cicadas, but seeing all the "mosquito" answers reminded me of a lot of miserable nights in a tent, dreading waking up feeling like an itchy pincushion......

Still waiting for God's explanation about mosquitos....

The sound of birds in the early morning when I still want to sleep. But, I would certainly miss their presence if I never could hear their cheerful and lusty cries.
