despite what others are saying, most of the major insurance companies cover weight loss surgery, but there may be an exclusion policy through your specific workplace. The only way to find out is to call the number on the back of your insurance and ask about bariatric or weight loss surgery coverage and what sort of steps you need to go through to get it approved.

The process usually takes several months for all the pre-operative testing, so be prepared for that. Also, look into finding a bariatric surgeon that is in your network.

Most insurances don't cover gastric bypass - they either call it elective cosmetic or experimental. The ONLY way you can possibly get it covered is if it's deemed medically necessary for lifesaving reasons - and then there needs to be A LOT of documentation from at least two or three different doctors to back it up.

But,call member services (the number is on the id card) to be sure.

Most insurers will not cover gastric bypass or lap banding in most circumstances. If your daughter does not currently have insurance, any procedure may require a waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Talk to an independent insurance agent for the best person live, or research on reputable sites.

You'll have to call the telephone number on the back of her insurance card.

MOST insurance companies do NOT cover gastric bypass, however, if you talk to her doctor and hospital, you can get a cash price and work out a payment plan.

You will have to check with her insurance carrier to see what's covered under her plan. If it's not covered by the insurance then I'd like to suggest the option of going overseas for her treatment. In some countries you can buy the same quality healthcare for a lot cheaper than the US. Example: India, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico.

I went to Thailand for my cosmetic surgery which was not covered by my insurance and saved about 80% of the cost in the US. Healthbase.com helped me arrange my treatment overseas. They might be able to help you as well. BTW, here's more information on their blog on obesity and its treatments: http://healthbase.wordpress.com/2007/02/12/obesity-risks-and-treatments.

The information and coverage will vary by insurance carrier...your best bet and the logical thing to do would be to contact her company directly to get the answers you are looking for directly from the source.
