I once read (Not in the Bible, there are other books on the time of Jesus based on FACT) that that was an early way of writing that word. I't said that if Jesus was a Christian (He wasnt) he waould have used that symbol. Actually his name wasnt actually christ, Im pretty sure that is a term that refers to who Christians believe him to be. Its not meant in offense so why so touchy?

I believe that it was a Newsweek article

"
The truth is evidant here, this is intended as a snub to Christians and puts out the message that it is obnoxious for Atheists to write the name Christ.
Surely Atheists with integrity would admit to this. "

Not the case. Xians with brains would understand this.

In the Greek language, the first letter of the word Christ the the letter "chi", which would evolve into the the English letter "x". The "chi" was as uncommon for a first letter as the X is today. Because all books before the invention of the printing press in the 1400's were hand copied, often abbreviations were used for words to shorten copying time and effort. Once of those abbreviations was the use of only the letter "chi" (X) to represent the name/title Christ.

It was also used to shortened words like "Christian" and "Christmas". Originally it was simply a time saved, and not a sign of respect or disrepect, simply effectency.

However, today it is sometimes used as a sign of disrepect when it is intended to "X" out the name Christ. Some people, especially if they do not understand the origan of the term, can be offended by it.

The word "Christ" is not a name, but a title. However it is often used as "a name" in the way that you would refer to a judge as "your honor", or to a public offical by their title such as "Mr President" or "Your majesty". The word "Christ" is the Greek word for the Hebrew term "Messiah". They both mean "Anointed One".

Because most Christians aren't familiar with the information you just provided. I used to get upset when anyone wrote Xmas, because I felt that it was replacing Christ with X -- it seemed very disrespectful. However, I later learned that X was an ancient abbreviation for Christ and did not used to be offensive for Christians. They often used the abbreviation XR to stand for Christ is King. Christians who are not aware of this tend to see Xtains or Xmas as offensive because we no longer use these abbreviations in the church.

For the same reason that many of them don't know that Christians used to use the pentacle for the symbol of truth and the five wounds of Christ. Many of them don't know the history of their religion.
And people Christ couldn't have been a Christian. Christians are the FOLLOWERS of Christ. Jesus was a heretic Jew.

Because most people are ignorant of their religion and its history and the culture around the time the events in said religion happened and so with out education they are defensive about only the limited truth they know of their religion and so sometimes get offend because they refuse to accept any education that changes what they have already made their mind up on.

First, saying Jesus wasn't a Christian is a little silly. Like saying Martin Luther wasn't a Protestant.

The X is annoying because it's disrespectful. "Christ" means "anointed one" in Greek, and it's a title. It's like changing the "Dr." in someone's name because you want to act like they don't have a degree.

X is the Greek letter Chi, first letter of the word Christos (Christ).

Some people use initials.

Some do, some don't.

Some will, some won't.

Does not bother me, and yes I am a Christian.

What others say or do does not harm me, I want you to know him (JESUS), don't really care what you think of me. I don't think it bothers him either, if it did you would be a grease spot by now.

It's generally because the more fundamentalist sort of Christian hasn't got much of a grip on history or languages.
