You do not just put on a uniform, and become a Police Officer. There are so many variables that it would be impossible to say that one is more qualified than the other. Sometimes two highly trained Officers can't work together, because each one has their own version of what is more correct. Disregarding some physical aspects of the job, I consider a female as an equal.

There is a potential for the right person in any line of work. I have never done Police work but I have worked psychiatry in forensic lock-down units. You do not have a weapon of any type to physically handle violence. The patients, some of which are trying to prove that they are crazy, also know full well that they can hurt you while you can't hurt them. In this setting I have seen many women who were willing to fight and many men who were not. In any given crisis it would be the same people in the middle and the same ones dancing around the edge of the fight. I never saw it matter too much if it was a female nurse or a male. It is all in the person. The Police Officers that I have talked to, and nurses see a lot of cops, say the same thing.

I would have to go on a person to person basis, not male and female. Some people are not suited for law enforcement no matter what their gender. The conclusion that some people have that female or male officers are better at "whatever" is wrong. It depends on the individual. I have had female officers that cause a fight and male officers that calm a situation just by their presence. ( the common knowledge is that females calm a situation). I have had male officers who, although large, could not or would not fight as needed and I have had 100 lbs. females dive in and take down a big fighter. (the common knowledge is that males only can handle a fight).
In most departments it is not true that females and males have to pass the same exams. In Illinois the standards for the physical tests are much lower than they are for males. The physical standards are important but the individual is what counts.
Working with a partner you soon learn what each others strengths and weaknesses are. Being able to work with and play off each other is more important than male or female.

I believe in total equality all the way around. I see nothing in Law Enforcement or Police Work that cannot be handled equally well by either a man or a woman. First and foremost, police officers needs extensive training, both in handling violent offenders and in defusing potentially violent situations. They need an understanding of the law, as well as training in marksmanship and other methods of control. Women are as able, both physically and mentally, to handle these situations as well as men....and frequently can handle them better!

Absolutely. And in some cases women do it better. I have seen males escalate a situation just by being male and have a female approach the subject, take charge and de-escalate the scene to an effortless arrest.
A great many male officers could learn from a wise female sergeant as did I that "it's easier to talk em and walk em than beat em and drag em." I've seen this petite woman actually have hardened felons apologize for making her arrest them and "letting her down" by violating their parole. She's a pint size miracle-worker with a badge. lol
Admittedly there are some cases where male brute force is a requisite, and at times a female officer may find herself in danger due to her size. Hopefully she can bid a hasty retreat and wait for the cavalry to arrive. It's a risk every officer, male or female takes every day.

Definitely YES.
Man and Women are good at Policing for different reasons. When you need some muscle to take care of a situation, men can ofcourse ..take care of the situation. But women these days too are quite fit and can take charge at times.
Women approach things differently to men. And according to the situation, the approach needs to differ.
When dealing with issues concerning a woman, its mostly best dealt by a female police officer/s.
Parents: A man and a woman, they approach their children's crisis differently and help solve them. Likewise.... we need Male and Female Officers to help us deal with crisis situations.
Its both Men and Women together, that make things possible.

Yes, I do it everyday. In most cases, just because I don't have the brute strength of a male officer does not mean that I cannot control the situation. I have only been in two really good fights in 9 years, and they both went to jail. As for the rest, I talk my way out of the confrontation, and them into the back seat. It is not all about physical strength, it is about using what your strengths are to get the job done.

TOM W has it right about the advantages and disadvantages of each sex when it comes to law enforcement. I was in a court case involving a sensitive subject and my case was assigned a female detective, who also accompanied me to court to make me feel more comfortable. Days when she couldn't come with me to court, a female officer from the same district would come with me. I can definitely say I was way more comfortable with women sitting by me while giving testimony because they can relate more to what I was saying. As was mentioned before though, there are strengths and weaknesses with everything. A hardened, male criminal will probably respect a woman officer even less than he would a male, but we can't help that much and of all the lady officers I've met they are certainly tough!

for the most part they can, however, there are realistic limitations and advantages to each gender. Women can survive in a physical force environment by offsetting lack of strength with control devices like the Taser. Women also can gain the confidence of female suspects and victims in ways that men cannot. But each police department must be able to field a patrol force that can retain control of the streets and that force will always be primarily male. Male and female are not completely interchangable in duties but pretty close.
